Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future after a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth loss in 12 matches, representing the club's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I have got significant support from management,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win obviously but when you're coaching a team and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“We talk a lot. They assist for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I perceive the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them after this match yet so let’s see.”
Recurring Problems and Squad Response
The manager lamented recurring failings from his team in their Champions League loss, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It is not good enough. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past getting mad internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He went on, “It's tough because I’m playing for the team I support. I support them, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a period such as this with outcomes like these.”
He finished, “However we still have the crest on our chest. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad return to the top, prove once more what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the top club in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
