A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who fled after the explosion was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location displayed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, adding that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
