The network's Premier Fresh Series of 2025 Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
