Zverev Faces Felix Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown
Overview
The inherent challenges of round-robin tennis typically lead to at this point of the season-ending championships fans frequently find themselves puzzled, searching around for a computing device and attempting to calculate the brain-busting permutations of qualification. Yet tonight’s match between Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, fortunately, is simple. It's a direct elimination: the successful player secures a final four contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser goes home.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has been the champion at this competition previously on two instances and leads their head-to-head with six victories against three defeats, securing victories in both their previous matches on an enclosed hard court.
Yet … this type of playing field on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed the bulk of his trophies, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on midweek and he eliminated Zverev in the US Open third round in August. Additionally, conditions are faster in Turin than at Flushing Meadows, which works even more in AA’s favor.
If Zverev holds back, as he did against the Italian, and Felix aggressively challenges the European player with his stinging serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the earlier standout who was previously positioned ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the Big Three – who earns the questionable privilege of facing the global leader on Saturday.
Play begins: at about 8.30pm local time, 7.30pm GMT.
